Just like in earlier times, wearing white before Labor Day, or wearing black with brown is still acceptable. There is also another thing that seems to have stayed around. The fact that in most cases, it is the boy that still asks the girl to prom. However, in some little travelled areas of the U.S., they have came up with something different... The Sadie Hawkins dance. The Sadie Hawkins event gives the girls an acceptable opportunity to choose who they want to go on a date with... their little hearts desires.
Who Was "Sadie Hawkins"?:
According to folklore, little Miss Sadie Hawkins was "the ugliest gal in all them hills", and this day was her special day. Many may know her from a comic strip. Others may know her from the famous cartoon turned musical... Li'l Abner. No matter how you know her, the main idea behind the event was a day designated in the month of November when single females could physically chase single guys in hopes of catching their desired one for marriage.
As you can well guess, this was all the town's single guys most dreaded day of the year because they were forced to be the prey.
The Beginning Of Sadie Hawkins Dances:
Some schools across the U.S. drew inspiration from the unpredictable holiday and began having dances on Sadie Hawkins Day. Generally, it took place on the Saturday after November 9th. This was also the same time the festivity took place in Li'l Abner, but today they have Sadie Hawkins celebrations at anytime between November and February.
What is a Sadie Hawkins dance?:
Even though the holiday has been around since 1937 and most people are unaware of the hilarious history behind the idea, the girl asking the boy out for a date is still commonly named after sweet little Sadie Hawkins.
When I was going to school, we made pillows. Some even made shirts, or bought matching flannel shirts for their chosen fellow. We also wore blue jeans or coveralls... as we use to call them back then. It was fun seeing what everyone was making and their ideas. What was even more fun was seeing who the girls had chosen as their guy.
There was even a group called "Reliant K" that wrote a song about Sadie Hawkins. As I can best remember, it goes:
"All the girls in the bathroom talking;
Who they gonna take to the Sadie Hawkins;
My ears are burning but I kept on walking;
Smile on my face and an air guitar rocking.
The Sadie Hawkins Dance;
In my khaki pants;
There's nothing better;
(Oh oh oh)
The girls ask the guys;
It's always a surprise;
There's nothing better;
Baby do you like my sweater?
Sitting in the back of my next class napping;
Got up, gave a speech, then bowed to the clapping;
Told a funny joke got the whole class laughing;
Think I got a tan from the light in which I was basking.
The Sadie Hawkins Dance;
In my khaki pants;
There's nothing better;
(Oh oh oh)
The girls ask the guys;
It's always a surprise;
There's nothing better;
Baby do you like my sweater?
Scan the cafeteria for some good seating;
I found a good spot by the cheerleaders eating;
The quarterback asked me if I'd like a beating;
I said that's one thing I won't be needing;
And since I'm rather smart and cunning;
I took off down the next hall running;
Only to get stopped by a girl so stunning;
A girl so stunning.
She said, "You're smooth, and good with talking;
Your going with me to the Sadie Hawkins.
The Sadie Hawkins Dance;
In my khaki pants;
There's nothing better;
(Oh oh oh)
The girls ask the guys;
It's always a surprise;
There's nothing better;
Baby do you like my sweater?
The Sadie Hawkins Dance;
In my khaki pants;
There's nothing better;
(Oh oh oh)
The girls ask the guys;
It's always a surprise;
There's nothing better;
Baby do you like my sweater?"
