Helping your child kick the Ritalin Habit

Dealing with a child on Ritalin can get to you if you let it. I'm only speaking on my behalf and what I have experienced, when my son was on it. At first I didn't like the idea of him taking it, but I tell you what... it helped him out in school alot. He was able to learn, get his education, and earn his diploma. He had been taking Ritalin since he was 4 years of age, and continued to do so until he was 20. Thats a long time. However, me, as a parent, wasn't thrilled with the idea of him having to take it for the rest of his life. So I worked with him and worked with him until he got older and realized what the pill was for... and he didn't like how it made him feel. So when he starting getting out of control, I would ask him do you need to take your pill? He would say no. By doing that he learned to control himself. It wasn't an easy job, but we managed to do it. He is now 28, and doing just fine without it. A great part of the success can also be attributed to the fact that he had a good understanding doctor who cared and helped greatly. If you have a loved one, or someone you know who desire to kick the ritalin habit, please talk to your prescribing doctor and express your wishes. |
